This Year’s Art and Structure exhibit, Exit Strategy, was a huge success, raising awareness and over $80,000 for Common Ground’s Veterans Initiative. Designed to prevent homelessness among veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, the initiative grew out of the knowledge that military veterans are disproportionately at risk for becoming homeless: almost one in four (23%) of the homeless are military veterans.

The Art and Structure exhibits are organized and hosted each year by Joan and Marc Sherman; for the second year in a row, this event benefited Common Ground. Exit Strategy exhibitors responded to the difficult “maze” that many veterans face upon their return from combat. Diane Lewis, John Ahearn, and J. Hoberman explored the “place,” both physical and psychological, that veterans occupy in our society with their exhibit Paths of Glory. Ali Hocek, the photographers of Group M35 and documentary director Dan Lohaus examined the experience of veterans upon their exit from military service in their piece, Forgotten Exits. Finally, with Circle, Cycle, Calvin Tsao and Steve Mumford used spatial relationships to express emergence and the struggle to overcome isolation.
Thank you to all those who supported this event, and especially Joan and Marc Sherman!
