Your donation to Common Ground will help us end homelessness.

With your support, we will expand our efforts to build safe, attractive, affordable housing - as well as our targeted programs to meet the needs of specific groups at risk of becoming homeless, including young people, low-income working adults, families in crisis, and those with serious health issues.

Our goal is to enable homeless, formerly homeless, and low-income individuals and families achieve financial self-sufficiency and build independent lives. Our solutions are innovative, cost-effective, and results-oriented.

The Robin Hood Foundation Challenge Grant

This fall, Common Ground and the Actors' Fund of America will begin construction on a new permanent supportive housing residence in downtown Brooklyn. As part of a mixed-used urban development plan sponsored by Hamlin Ventures and Time Equities, we will build a 216-unit supportive housing residence whose tenants will include lower-income working people and the formerly homeless. To help put Schermerhorn House into construction, the Robin Hood Foundation has awarded a challenge grant:

For every dollar Common Ground raises for Schermerhorn House by April 27, 2006,  the Robin Hood  Foundation will donate two dollars, up to a total of $575,000.

The funds raised through this challenge will create  affordable homes for formerly homeless adults and New Yorkers working for limited wages, primarily in the arts and entertainment industry. Services on site will help tenants acquire the training and skills needed to obtain living wage employment and establish lives of increased self-sufficiency.

Your gift, in any amount, will help make Schermerhorn House a reality:

  • $100 will purchase a tenant 's mailbox
  • $500 will purchase a bed
  • $1,200 will purchase a shower and tub
  • $2,000 will furnish a room
  • $4,500 will purchase one ton of steel for the 23-foot trusses that will support the building
  • $10,000 will purchase ten reinforced concrete columns

You can also direct your gift towards a special naming opportunity within the building. For more information, please call Ellen Goetz at 212-471-0885.

And remember, with the Robin Hood challenge, every dollar you give will bring an additional two dollars toward this project. To ensure that your gift is counted towards the challenge, please note that the contribution is  for the Schermerhorn House construction.   Thank you!

Your gift to Common Ground will make a real difference for someone in need.
