National Grid contributes to environmental sustainability at The Hegeman
On April 30, 2012, National Grid presented Common Ground Community (CG) with a Green Cinderella Grant to help pay for environmentally sustainable equipment and features at our newest permanent supportive residence at 39 Hegeman Avenue in Brooklyn, as part of our mission to end homelessness in New York.
“National Grid has a long history of working with many Brooklyn organizations in support of the local community. We are happy to have this opportunity to partner with Common Ground Community to provide energy efficient and affordable housing,” said Ken Daly, president National Grid for New York. “Since 1966, the Cinderella Program has been a major part of National Grid’s commitment to sustainability and the environment and to improving the quality of life in the communities in which we live and work.”
“National Grid’s gift of $15,000 will help fund a green roof, condensing boilers, individually climate-controlled apartments, state-of-the-art fluorescent lighting, hydronic wall panels, domestic graywater plumbing, and low-toxicity paint and flooring materials,” said Brenda E. Rosen, Common Ground’s Executive Director.
The National Grid gift, combined with other capital funding from NYC Housing Preservation and Development, NYS Homeless Housing and Assistance Program, Federal Home Loan Bank, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and NYS Housing Finance Agency, will result in a LEED Silver certification for the Hegeman project, placing it among a small handful of supportive housing properties in New York City to meet this high threshold of environmental sustainability.
