Veteran, former addict and currently living in transitional housing at the Montrose Veterans Residence.
Alfonso Spann served in the United States Army from 1978 to 1981 and achieved the rank of E-3 when he was honorably discharged. After leaving the service and transitioning back to civilian life, Alfonso became the person he never wanted to be. He started using drugs and eventually struggled with the addiction for more than 30 years. After spending time in prison in 2008, he found himself homeless. Alfonso sought medical and substance abuse services at the Montrose campus. In 2011, he entered Common Ground’s Transitional Housing Program for Veterans. Alfonso started school in October 2011, where he is working toward his CASAC-T (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor) certification. Alfonso recently started a job with the VA in the food service department.
